The Micanopy Area

Back to previous page          Home

This is one of the nicest day trips around the Gainesville area. Micanopy is one of the most historic little towns in Florida and is known for its antique stores. Most of these are not "touristy junk" stores - this is real antique country! Several nice little places to eat too.

Most everyone has heard of Cross Creek because of Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings books. Her home and property has been preserved here as a State Park for all to visit. There is a small donation required for the tour of the house but entry to the grounds is free. Experience old Florida life as she did - not much has changed around here. Not a touristy destination at all, just peace, quiet and history. Visit the Yearling Restaurant if you're there in the evening or weekend. Cross Creek itself befits its name as it connects two large lakes in the area, crossing the highway just west of the Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings State Park. Sit by the peaceful waters and relax a while.

The two little towns of McIntosh and Evinston are pretty much the same they were many, many years except the railroad no longer runs through the area. They are known as "artsy" communities with quite a few art shows being held in the area. Make sure to visit the Wood & Swink General Store and Post Office in Evinston, the oldest operating post office in Florida, again much as it was many years ago. Its not open all the time so be prepared for that possibility. There seems to be no regular hours!

Paynes Prairie is the Flat Land Savannah of Florida. Bison and Wild Horses still roam here including lots of alligators. Its probably one of the best gator viewing areas around! A very unusual place on highway 441 between metropolitan Gainesville and historic Micanopy.

Enter this driving trip from the south part of Gainesville or off of I-75 at the Micanopy exit, # 374.
