What we call the Goethe Forest Loop will take you through this beautiful 53,000+ acre forest. The Florida State Division of Forestry provides for multiple uses of the forest resources which includes timber management, wildlife management, outdoor recreation and ecological restoration. It is a big favorite for horse lovers with many backwoods trails devoted to riding along with several nearby stables.
A very worthwhile side trip from the main loop brings you through Inglis, on to Yankeetown on the Withlacoochee River. The road ends of the mouth of the river at the Gulf of Mexico. There are many opportunities for fishing, boating and swimming here along with some great photo opportunities.
The City of Dunnellon, mostly in Marion County, a bit in Levy County, on the southern end of this loop is known for its quaint small town atmosphere and wonderful antique shopping. There are several good restaurants to have lunch or dinner including one of the best Mexican restaurants we've ever had the privilege to visit.
Rainbow Springs State Park is just north of Dunnellon. Great swimming, tubing and just plain sightseeing. Two waterfalls in the park are beautiful and will make you think you're in the mountains for a short while instead of the flatlands of Florida. These are man-made but use actual rocks from the nearby river, so at least they're partly real! Notice on the Interactive Map the entrance for tubing is on the east side of the river although the main entrance to the park and headwaters of the spring is on the west side.
