Hagen's Cove, which is located right on the Gulf, is State owned and maintained. Here you'll find picnic pavilions, hiking trails, and an observation tower. Because of the shallow waters and grass flats, you'll find several species of fish and birds, horseshoe crabs, and even the occasional eagle.
Former President Jimmy Carter and his wife have been regular visitors at Hagan's Cove, a favorite place of theirs, and enjoy bird watching from the observation tower. They do frequent stays in the Strinhatchee area.
A point of interest for those of you interested in botany: The pine tree in one of the photos above is a Pinellas Pine and this is the farthest north one has ever been found. There are 5-6 of them in this area.
