Cedar Key Conservation Awards

Hardison, © May 9, 2012 CEDAR KEY – Business interests, restaurants, lodging facilities and clubs received plaques and other recognition Wednesday morning, which they earned from the previous year of conservation activities. The recycling effort, and the conservation of electricity and water for the good of the environment in and around Cedar Key has been strong for several decades. Since 2010, the Cedar Key Energy Advisory Panel has been honoring people for efforts that match with its mission statement – “Through government leadership and community participation, we will preserve these islands and become a model for energy awareness, conservation and sustainability.”

Cross City Charged With DUI Manslaughter/Vehic. Homicide

Hardison, © May 10, 2012 BRONSON – A 40-year-old Cross City man surrendered himself to authorities at Levy County Jail Thursday (May 10) on charges of DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide, according to a press release from the Florida Highway Patrol. Keith Shane Bush, a former correctional officer with the Florida Department of Corrections, may see the other side of life in the Florida Prison System. An accident on Jan. 31 led to Bush’s current home being the Levy County Jail.

Hardison, © April 29, 2012 WACCASASSA RIVER – It’s named the Waccasassa River but there was some tough going in the river for canoeists and kayakers this year during the 35th Annual Wild Hog Canoe and Kayak Race. “And the story it told, of a river that flowed, made me sad to think it was dead.” – America, A Horse With No Name The river is still alive. It was just the lowest it has been in a couple of generations. The First Place finalist in the Experienced Category this year said the river was the lowest he has seen in all the years he has participated. He finished Second Place in 1978. John Edwards, 63, of St. Petersburg won the First Place paddle this year in the Experienced Category. He said it wasn’t until the second year of what was then known as the Wild Hog Canoe Race that he started participating.

Electricity: The invisible killer
By Jeff M. Hardison, © March 1, 2012 CHIEFLAND – A downed wire can seem to be inactive, but that invisible electricity may be energizing the ground around it for as far out as 35 feet. As for safety with electricity, Central Florida Electric Cooperative Manager of Customer Service A.D. Goodman and Member Service Representative Ryan Watson presented information and gave demonstrations to the Chiefland Rotary Club on Leap Day (Feb. 29). Complacency and ignorance are two factors that can lead to death, serious injury and property loss when a person fails to follow safe procedures relating to electricity.

Old Engine Brings New Energy; Chiefland Fire Dept. Improving

Hardison, © Feb. 29, 2012 CHIEFLAND – A used KME Fire Engine purchase by Chiefland Fire Rescue after Chief James Harris found it is another part of the ongoing efforts to continue building the department. A quick tour Wednesday afternoon of the Fire Station provided by Capt. Ben Lowe shows the chief and other firefighters are improving the structure while taking innovative steps for recycling material, saving money and adding a touch of class and life to the institution.
